Stockholm's Nationalmuseum re-opened in autumn after renovations, sparking debate about how best to chronicle Sweden's art history. The museum opened in 1866, presenting industrial design alongside fine art to illustrate Sweden's industrialisation. Carl Larsson's murals in the stairhall depict King Gustav Vasa arriving in Stockholm in 1523, alongside Nicodemus Tessin the Younger, who brought Rococo architecture to Sweden.
The permanent collection holds more than 5,200 artworks, twice the number visible before the renovation. The top floor surveys the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries, alongside temporary exhibitions. The museum illustrates the influence of Nicodemus Tessin the Younger (1654–1728) and his son Count Carl Gustaf Tessin.
