Claude was orphaned at twelve and arrived in Rome as a teenager, possibly trained as a pastry cook. The pastry detail comes from his first biographer and may be embellished, but the trajectory is real: a boy from Chamagne in Lorraine, with no education and no connections, who became the most sought-after landscape painter in Italy within twenty years.

Biography
He studied under Agostino Tassi, a painter of architectural frescoes who also happened to be a convicted rapist (Tassi had been tried for raping Artemisia Gentileschi in 1612). The moral complications of the studio did not prevent Claude from learning what he needed: perspective, coast scenes, the organisation of light across a composition. He spent years sketching outdoors along the Tiber and in the Roman Campagna, drawing at dawn and dusk when the light did what he wanted it to do.
By 1637 he had commissions from Pope Urban VIII, several cardinals, and Philip IV of Spain. His harbour scenes and pastoral landscapes present nature as more orderly and luminous than it actually is: an idealised version of the world, with classical buildings, golden light, and small figures dwarfed by the architecture and the sky. He often hired other painters to add the figures, remarking that he sold the landscape; the figures were free.
He was plagued by forgers. In 1635 he began the Liber Veritatis, a book of 195 drawings copied from his own paintings with the patron's name noted on the back. It was a catalogue raisonne made as self-defence, and it gradually became his most treasured possession and a work of art in its own right.
The Gulf of Naples haunted him. He visited once and painted its coastline from memory for the rest of his life.
