Sophie Taeuber-Arp was a Swiss artist who trained in textile design and later studied art in Hamburg and Munich. She was also a dancer who performed avant-garde choreography in a nightclub under a pseudonym, and she taught at the School of Applied Arts in Zurich. She is also known for marrying the sculptor Jean Arp in 1922, with whom she collaborated on many projects.

Sophie Taeuber-Arp was part of the Dada movement, performing at the Cabaret Voltaire in Zurich during the First World War. Throughout her career, she aimed to remove perceived differences between applied, fine, and performance arts.

Taeuber-Arp's art style involved geometric compositions, which she reached through the grid structures of weaving. Her geometric compositions from 1915 to 1917 include coloured-pencil drawings of vertical and horizontal grids. These works are contemporary with Mondrian and Malevich, though she arrived at abstraction by a different route.
