A striking abstract composition by Sophie Taeuber-Arp, 'Echelonnement desaxe' features undulating horizontal bands in contrasting dark grey and white, creating a dynamic and balanced visual experience.
Sophie Taeuber-Arp (1889-1943) was a Swiss artist, sculptor, dancer, and designer, considered one of the most important figures of the Dada movement. Her work often explored abstraction and geometric forms, reflecting the avant-garde spirit of the early 20th century. Taeuber-Arp's diverse practice spanned painting, sculpture, textile design, and performance, all characterised by a distinctive visual language. She was married to the artist Jean Arp, and they collaborated on numerous projects. 'Echelonnement desaxe' presents a composition of horizontal bands in alternating dark grey and white. The bands are not straight; instead, they undulate with a gentle, wave-like rhythm. The dark grey bands appear to frame the white ones, creating a sense of depth and movement. The overall effect is one of dynamic equilibrium, as the contrasting colours and shapes interact to form a balanced, yet visually stimulating, design. The simplicity of the colour palette and the geometric forms are typical of Taeuber-Arp's abstract style, which sought to express universal principles through non-representational means.
