This abstract composition by Sophie Taeuber-Arp features a grid of coloured circles, showcasing her Dadaist interest in geometric forms and balanced arrangements. The artwork's simplicity and careful composition create a sense of visual interest and movement.
Sophie Taeuber-Arp (1889-1943) was a Swiss artist, sculptor, painter, dancer, and designer, and is considered one of the most important artists of the Dada movement. Her work often explored abstraction and incorporated geometric forms, reflecting her interest in the synthesis of art and design. She was married to the artist Jean Arp. Taeuber-Arp's career was cut short by her accidental death in 1943. Her work has since been recognised for its innovative approach to abstraction and its contribution to the development of modern art. 'Composition dans un cercle' presents a grid-like arrangement of coloured circles against a white background. The circles are rendered in a range of hues, including yellow, blue, red, green, and shades of grey. The composition is carefully balanced, with the placement of each circle seemingly deliberate. The arrangement of the circles does not follow a strict pattern, creating a sense of visual interest and movement. The artwork's simplicity and geometric abstraction are characteristic of Taeuber-Arp's style, reflecting her engagement with the principles of Dada and Constructivism.
