The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City is one of the most influential museums of modern art. Founded in 1929 by Lillie P. Bliss, Mary Quinn Sullivan, and Abby Aldrich Rockefeller, MoMA was created to exhibit modernism at a time when few American museums showed late 19th- and 20th-century art. Alfred H. Barr Jr., MoMA’s first director, created departments for painting, sculpture, photography, prints, and drawings.
MoMA is known for its early and progressive exhibitions, such as Cubism and Abstract Art and Fantastic Art, Dada, Surrealism (1936). The museum also organised shows that examined non-Western art in artistic terms, including American Sources of Modern Art (Aztec, Maya, Inca) in 1933 and African Negro Art in 1935.
