The National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., holds an extensive collection of paintings, drawings, prints, sculpture, and decorative arts. Unlike many European national galleries, its origins lie in the vision of Andrew Mellon, who, in 1937, donated his substantial private collection to the nation. Mellon's gift, which included masterpieces from the Hermitage, formed the core of the museum's holdings. The government provided a plot on Constitution Avenue, and Mellon funded the construction of the impressive Neo-Classical building. Today, the National Gallery continues to expand its collection through both acquisitions and donations, with benefactors often recognised through named galleries and rooms.
