Biography

His first Pop painting, Situation in Cuba (1961[1]), showed the American flag eating into the Cuban flag, a direct response to the Bay of Pigs invasion. That same year he exhibited in the landmark Young Contemporaries show. In 1962 Ken Russell filmed him alongside Peter Blake, Pauline Boty, and Peter Phillips for the BBC documentary Pop Goes the Easel; Russell noted that Boshier's work carried a distinctly intellectual, analytical tenor compared to his peers. Drawing on Kellogg's cereal packaging and Pepsi logos as raw material, his paintings dissected rather than celebrated post-war consumerism.
