Kapoor made a hole in the ground and covered the inside with pigment so dark it appeared to have no bottom. Descent into Limbo (1992) looked like a painted circle on the floor until you stood at the edge and realised you were looking into an actual void. A visitor fell in at a 2018 exhibition in Porto, which confirmed the illusion was effective.

Biography
He was born in Mumbai and moved to London in 1973 to study at Hornsey College of Art and Chelsea School of Art. His early sculptures are simple geometric forms covered in loose powdered pigment: bright blue, red, yellow. The pigment sits on the surface unbound, as if the colour itself were the material rather than the object underneath.
The large-scale public works followed. Cloud Gate in Chicago (2006), a 110-ton polished steel bean that reflects the city skyline in its curved surface, is visited by millions of people annually. Sky Mirror, a concave steel disc that reflects the sky, has been installed in Nottingham, New York, and Kensington Gardens. The engineering is complex. The surfaces are seamless.
He acquired exclusive rights to Vantablack, a material that absorbs 99.96% of visible light, making objects coated in it appear as flat black voids. The exclusivity annoyed other artists, particularly Stuart Semple, who responded by creating the 'pinkest pink' pigment and making it available to everyone except Kapoor. The dispute was silly and instructive.
He won the Turner Prize in 1991 and was knighted in 2013. He lives in London and continues to make work that is simultaneously spectacular and unsettling.
