Eduardo Paolozzi

Paolozzi made a collage in 1947 called I Was a Rich Man's Plaything that included a Coca-Cola advertisement, a pin-up, a bomber, and the word POP fired from a pistol. It is often cited as the first work of Pop Art, predating Warhol and Lichtenstein by fifteen years. Paolozzi was not interested in claiming the title. He was interested in the collage.

Portrait of Eduardo Paolozzi

Biography

He was born in Leith, Edinburgh, to Italian immigrant parents. His father, grandfather, and uncle were interned as enemy aliens in 1940 and died when the ship transporting them to Canada was torpedoed. He was sixteen. The loss shadowed his work: fragmented figures, broken machinery, the sense of things that have been taken apart and reassembled imperfectly.

He studied at Edinburgh College of Art[5] and the Slade, lived in Paris (where he met Giacometti, Braque, and Leger), and returned to London to teach at the Central School of Art and Design. His lectures at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in 1952, where he projected found images from American magazines onto the wall, are considered a founding moment of British Pop Art.

His sculptures are assembled from machine parts, toys, and industrial components, cast in bronze or aluminium. They look like robots dreaming. The mosaics at Tottenham Court Road tube station (now partly relocated) covered the walls with bright, fractured patterns derived from his collage technique. He was knighted in 1989. He died in 2005, at eighty-one.
