Mikuláš Galanda, though tragically short-lived, stands as a pivotal figure in the development of Slovak Modernism. Born in 1895, Galanda sought to synthesise international avant-garde trends with specifically Slovakian folk traditions, an approach that set him apart from many of his contemporaries. He wasn't merely interested in depicting rural life; rather, he aimed to extract and abstract the underlying symbolic language of the Slovak people. Galanda's paintings, drawings, and graphic works often feature simplified forms, bold colours, and a dreamlike atmosphere. Key works such as "Slovak Madonna" and his series of folk-inspired lithographs showcase his unique ability to blend the sacred and the secular, the modern and the traditional.
