A tranquil Impressionist painting by Claude Monet showing the Grand Canal in Venice. Soft blues and greys capture the unique light and atmosphere of the famous canal.
Claude Monet (1840-1926) was a founder of French Impressionism, the art movement that shifted painting from historical, religious, and allegorical subjects to observations of modern life and the effects of light and colour. Monet is perhaps best known for his serial studies, such as his water lilies and Rouen Cathedral paintings, in which he depicted the same subject under varying conditions. This painting depicts the Grand Canal in Venice. The viewpoint is from a low vantage point, near the water level, looking towards the Salute. Wooden pilings dominate the left foreground, their reflections adding vertical accents to the water. The basilica's dome is rendered in soft blues and greys, its form softened by the hazy atmosphere. The buildings along the canal are suggested with loose brushstrokes, their details indistinct. The water itself is a mosaic of blues and greens, capturing the reflections of the sky and buildings. The overall effect is one of tranquility and atmosphere, capturing the unique light and atmosphere of Venice.
