Prentiss Taylor

  • Harlem Renaissance

Prentiss Taylor was a white artist who became a collaborator in the Harlem Renaissance through his close friendship with Langston Hughes. In 1931, they founded Golden Stair Press to produce affordable books of poetry and art. Taylor provided the illustrations for Hughes's "The Negro Mother" and "Scottsboro Limited." This partnership allowed Taylor to contribute to the movement while working across racial lines.

Portrait of Prentiss Taylor

Biography

Taylor focused on lithography and printmaking. He studied at the Art Students League under Charles Locke. His compositions often use stark black and white contrasts to create mood. He frequently chose subjects related to jazz and urban scenes. His style avoids clutter. He relied on clear lines and geometric shapes to organise his prints, often keeping the subject centred and avoiding the use of colour.

Modern collectors value Taylor for his technical skill in lithography. His prints have a graphic clarity that suits contemporary interiors. The history of his collaborations adds interest to his work. These prints offer a look at the social history of the United States through a disciplined, monochromatic lens.
