Julie Mehretu

After completing her studies at Kalamazoo College and earning an MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1997, Mehretu began to develop her distinctive visual language. She combines elements of architectural drawing, urban planning schematics, and cartography within her compositions. These layers of information create complex, multi-perspectival spaces that seem to shift and evolve. Her earlier works often incorporated specific building plans, such as those of airports or stadiums.

Mehretu's artistic process involves a meticulous layering of marks, lines, and washes. She works on large canvases, sometimes spanning several metres, building up surfaces with ink, acrylic, and other media. This approach allows her to create a sense of movement and depth, inviting viewers to explore the many narratives embedded within her abstract forms. Each piece is a dense accumulation of graphical data, suggesting cities, crowd movements, or historical upheavals.

In 2005, Julie Mehretu received a MacArthur Fellowship, acknowledging her significant contributions to contemporary art. Her paintings and prints are held in major collections worldwide. She continues to examine themes of urbanism, social histories, and the dynamics of power through her unique blend of abstraction and diagrammatic representation. Her work offers a visual commentary on the complexities of modern existence.
