Wyeth painted the same places his entire life: Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, and Cushing, Maine. Two locations. The farmland around his home and the coastline near his summer house. He knew every field, every building, every face. He painted them in egg tempera, a medium that dries almost instantly and requires small, precise strokes built up over weeks or months. The technique is medieval. The subjects are twentieth-century rural America.
Key facts
Biography
His father, N.C. Wyeth, was one of the most successful illustrators in American history: Treasure Island, Robinson Crusoe, The Last of the Mohicans. Andrew grew up in a household where picture-making was the family business. His father trained him at home, keeping him out of school. The education was rigorous and narrow: drawing, painting, Homer, Shakespeare, Beethoven.
Christina's World (1948) is the painting everyone knows. A woman crawling through a dry grass field toward a farmhouse on a hill. The woman, Christina Olson, had a degenerative muscular condition that left her unable to walk. She refused a wheelchair and dragged herself across the ground. Wyeth observed this and painted it. The painting has been on so many posters and cards that it is difficult to see it freshly, but the composition is extraordinary: a vast field, a small figure, and a house that is both home and an unreachable destination.
He had a fifteen-year secret relationship with a neighbour called Helga Testorf, during which he painted over 240 portraits and studies of her without his wife's knowledge. The Helga pictures were revealed in 1986 and caused a scandal. He continued to paint Chadds Ford and Cushing until his death in 2009, at ninety-one.
