A study of worn leather boots by Vincent van Gogh, captured with heavy brushwork and a muted, earthy palette.
Vincent van Gogh produced this study of worn footwear during his period in Paris. The composition features three distinct pairs of leather boots, rendered with thick, expressive brushwork that emphasises the physical texture of the worn material. The palette is dominated by muted earth tones, greys, and blacks, which draw attention to the heavy, utilitarian nature of the objects. Van Gogh frequently returned to the subject of old shoes throughout his career. These items were often sourced from flea markets or his own wardrobe. By focusing on these discarded objects, the artist shifted his attention away from traditional academic subjects, choosing instead to find visual interest in the remnants of daily labour. The arrangement of the boots on a plain surface suggests a casual, unposed quality, yet the application of paint reveals a deliberate effort to capture the weight and form of the leather. This work reflects the artist's interest in the material reality of the working class. The heavy soles, frayed laces, and scuffed surfaces are depicted with a directness that avoids sentimentality. The background remains indistinct, ensuring that the viewer's attention stays fixed on the physical presence of the shoes. This piece provides a clear example of how Van Gogh utilised his technique to elevate mundane objects into subjects worthy of sustained observation. The painting is currently held in the collection of the Fogg Museum at Harvard University.
