A classic Realist work by Jean-Francois Millet, depicting three peasant women gathering wheat in a harvested field.
Jean-Francois Millet completed The Gleaners in 1857. It depicts three women gathering leftover stalks of wheat after the harvest. The figures occupy the foreground, their bodies bent low to the earth in a repetitive, rhythmic motion. Their clothing is simple, consisting of muted tones that blend with the harvested field. In the distance, the scene shows the abundance of the main harvest, with large haystacks and a busy farm overseer on horseback. This contrast between the workers in the field and the wealth of the farm owner was a subject of social commentary during the period. Millet was a central figure of the Barbizon school. He focused on the lives of rural workers, treating them with a gravity previously reserved for historical or religious subjects. The composition uses a low horizon line, which gives the three women a monumental quality. The light is soft, suggesting a late afternoon sun that casts long shadows across the stubble. The brushwork is controlled, focusing on the texture of the fabric and the dry, golden earth. By choosing to depict the poorest members of the rural community, Millet brought attention to the realities of agricultural labour in nineteenth-century France. The painting remains a primary example of the Realist movement, which sought to represent subjects without idealisation or romantic artifice.
