A tranquil, dreamlike jungle scene by Henri Rousseau, featuring flamingoes and water lilies in a highly stylised, decorative composition.
Henri Rousseau, a self-taught customs officer, produced this work during the final years of his career. It belongs to his series of jungle paintings, a subject he explored through visits to the Jardin des Plantes in Paris and by studying botanical illustrations. Rousseau never travelled outside of France, relying instead on his imagination and printed sources to construct these dense, tropical environments. The composition is structured with a clear horizontal division. The foreground features a calm body of water populated by water lilies, rendered with a flat, decorative quality. To the right, a small group of flamingoes stands on the bank, their forms simplified and stylised. In the distance, a line of palm trees creates a rhythmic, repetitive pattern against the pale sky. The inclusion of small figures on a sandbank adds a sense of scale and narrative mystery, a common device in Rousseau's work. His approach to perspective is unconventional, prioritising clarity and pattern over traditional depth. The foliage is painted with meticulous attention to individual leaves, creating a sense of order that contrasts with the wild nature of the subject. The colour palette remains relatively restrained, using muted blues, greens, and soft pinks to maintain a sense of stillness. This work demonstrates his ability to transform ordinary observations into dreamlike, constructed realities. The painting is a characteristic example of his late period, where his confidence in handling larger canvases allowed for more complex arrangements of flora and fauna. By removing the chaotic elements of a real jungle, Rousseau presents a curated, tranquil vision of an exotic world.
