A classic Northern Mannerist interpretation of the biblical Susanna and the Elders, featuring expressive figures and rich, saturated colours.
Hendrik de Clerck, a prominent figure in the Brussels school during the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, presents a characteristic interpretation of the biblical narrative of Susanna and the Elders. The composition adheres to the conventions of Northern Mannerism, prioritising elongated figures and a deliberate, theatrical arrangement of the subjects. Susanna is positioned centrally, her posture conveying a sense of vulnerability as she is confronted by the two men. The Elders are depicted with expressive, weathered features, their gestures and gazes directed toward her in a manner typical of the period's dramatic storytelling.
The colour palette is marked by saturated tones, particularly in the garments of the figures, which contrast with the more muted, atmospheric background. De Clerck employs a sophisticated use of light to model the forms, drawing attention to the textures of the fabric and the skin tones of the protagonists. In the background, a formal garden and architectural elements provide a sense of depth, reflecting the influence of Italian art on the Flemish masters of the time. A small fountain featuring a putto sits to the right, adding a classical decorative element to the scene.
This work demonstrates the artist's technical proficiency in handling complex multi-figure compositions. The interaction between the three primary figures is carefully balanced, creating a tension that defines the narrative. De Clerck was known for his courtly commissions, and this painting reflects the refined, polished aesthetic favoured by the elite patrons of Brussels. The attention to detail, from the folds of the drapery to the architectural precision of the distant buildings, is consistent with the high standards of his studio. This print captures the precise brushwork and the specific tonal qualities of the original oil painting, offering a clear view of the artist's approach to light and shadow.
