This engraving by Schelte Adamsz. Bolswert depicts the biblical narrative of the Feast of Herodias, a subject frequently explored within the Baroque tradition. Bolswert, a master engraver, worked closely with Peter Paul Rubens to translate the painterly qualities of the Flemish school into the medium of print. The composition follows the dramatic conventions of the period, utilising strong chiaroscuro effects to define the figures gathered around the banquet table.

At the centre of the scene, Salome presents the head of Saint John the Baptist on a platter, a moment of high tension captured with technical precision. The surrounding figures, including Herod and his guests, display varied reactions to the grim offering. Bolswert employs a sophisticated system of cross-hatching and line variation to render the textures of the heavy drapery, the architectural elements of the hall, and the subtle expressions on the faces of the participants. The inclusion of a small monkey near the table adds a layer of symbolic detail common in seventeenth-century moralising art.

The print demonstrates the technical mastery required to replicate the scale and complexity of a large-format oil painting on a copper plate. The architectural setting, with its arched openings and heavy canopy, provides a sense of depth and theatricality.
