Arthur Dove (1880-1946) was an American artist, often considered one of the first American abstract painters. He was associated with Alfred Stieglitz's circle of artists and exhibited at Stieglitz's galleries. 'Sunrise' exemplifies Dove's approach to abstraction. The composition features a series of layered, undulating bands of colour that suggest a rising landscape. The colour palette includes yellows, reds, blues, and greens, applied in broad, gestural strokes. A white circle at the top alludes to the sun. The overall effect is a simplified, yet evocative, representation of a sunrise, capturing the feeling of light and atmosphere through abstract forms.
