A watercolour painting by Alexandre Benois depicting the Ray Embankment in Basel on a rainy day. The muted palette and delicate brushwork capture the atmosphere of a damp, overcast day.
Alexandre Benois, a Russian artist and stage designer, created this watercolour painting depicting the Ray Embankment in Basel during a rain shower. Benois was a member of the Mir iskusstva (World of Art) movement, which sought to promote aestheticism and integrate art into all aspects of life. He is particularly known for his contributions to the Ballets Russes, where he worked as a set and costume designer. In this work, the artist captures a moment of everyday life with a delicate touch. The scene is dominated by the wet embankment, reflecting the buildings and sky above. Two figures, each holding an umbrella, are seen walking along the embankment, accompanied by a small dog. The bare branches of trees frame the composition, adding to the atmosphere of a damp, overcast day. The colour palette is muted, with greys, blues, and browns predominating, which enhances the overall mood of the piece.
