A serene woodblock print from Hiroshige's Tokaido series, depicting travellers and a pack ox navigating a winding mountain pass near Minaguchi.
Minaguchi is the fifty-first station in Utagawa Hiroshige's series, The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido. This series established Hiroshige as a leading figure in Japanese landscape prints. The composition depicts a narrow mountain pass where the road winds between steep, grassy hills. In the centre of the image, a traveller leads a pack ox laden with goods. Behind them, another figure wearing a traditional straw hat follows the path. The hills are covered in short, rhythmic strokes representing grass, while scattered pine trees with dark green needles provide vertical structure. Hiroshige uses a limited palette of greens, blues, and ochre to define the terrain. The sky features large, white cumulus clouds that rise behind the distant blue mountains. A horizontal band of dark blue at the top of the print demonstrates the bokashi technique, a method of hand-applying ink to the woodblock to create a soft colour gradation. This technique adds atmospheric depth to the scene without the use of linear perspective. Minaguchi was historically known for the production of kanpyo, or dried gourd strips. While other versions of this station by Hiroshige focus on the women preparing these gourds, this specific design emphasises the physical journey and the topography of the Tokaido road. The cartouches in the upper right corner identify the series and the station name in Japanese characters.
