A triptych woodblock print by Utagawa Kuniyoshi, depicting three women in patterned kimonos near a river, with a distant cityscape in the background. The artwork showcases Kuniyoshi's skill in capturing detail and movement within the ukiyo-e tradition.
This triptych woodblock print by Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1798-1861) depicts three women near a river. Kuniyoshi was a prominent Japanese ukiyo-e artist of the Edo period, known for his depictions of historical and mythical scenes, as well as portraits of beautiful women and actors. His work is characterised by dynamic compositions, expressive figures, and a use of colour. He was one of the last great masters of the ukiyo-e style. The print shows three elegantly dressed women standing near a riverbank. Each figure is adorned in patterned kimonos, rendered with attention to detail. The background reveals a distant cityscape, with boats on the water and trees overhead. The composition is divided into three panels, each featuring a woman in a slightly different pose, creating a sense of movement and narrative across the artwork. The colour palette is dominated by shades of blue, with accents of red and white in the figures' clothing.
