A screenprint portrait of Mao Zedong by Andy Warhol, rendered in bold colours and gestural lines. This work exemplifies Warhol's Pop Art style and his fascination with celebrity and mass production.
Andy Warhol (1928-1987) was an American artist, film director, and producer who was a leading figure in the Pop Art movement. His works explore the relationship between artistic expression, celebrity culture, and advertising that flourished by the 1960s. Warhol's art employed various media, including hand drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, silk screening, sculpture, film, and music. He also pioneered computer-generated art using Amiga computers from 1985 until his death. Warhol's work has become among the most expensive ever sold. 'Mao' is a series of portraits created by Warhol in 1972, depicting the Chinese Communist leader Mao Zedong. The series reflects Warhol's fascination with celebrity and mass production, applying his signature screen-printing technique to create multiple images of the same subject. The portraits are characterised by bold colours and simplified forms, typical of Warhol's Pop Art style. This particular print features Mao's face in a light blue hue, set against a red background, with a yellow jacket and black hair. The image is further enhanced by gestural black lines, adding a sense of spontaneity to the otherwise mechanical reproduction.
