A 1906 portrait by Paula Modersohn-Becker, featuring two children at a table rendered with the artist's characteristic simplified forms and earthy palette.

Paula Modersohn-Becker painted this double portrait in 1906 during her time in Paris. The work depicts Lee and his sister, who were children of the sculptor Bernhard Hoetger. Modersohn-Becker, a central figure in the early German Expressionist movement, moved away from the naturalistic traditions of the Worpswede colony to develop a more personal, simplified aesthetic. Her approach here prioritises form and emotional presence over precise anatomical detail. The composition is notably flat, with the two figures positioned side by side at a table. A small plate containing fruit sits in the foreground, providing a domestic anchor to the scene. The artist employs broad, deliberate brushstrokes and a restricted, earthy palette. The faces are rendered with a sculptural quality, reflecting the influence of her friend Bernhard Hoetger and her interest in non-Western art forms, which she encountered in the Parisian museums. The heavy outlines and the lack of traditional perspective create a sense of stillness and gravity. Modersohn-Becker often sought to capture the essence of her subjects through a reduction of visual information. In this painting, the children appear as monumental, almost static figures. The muted tones of the background contrast with the lighter, simplified garments of the sitters, drawing the eye to their expressions. This work demonstrates her ability to synthesise the lessons of Paul Cézanne and Paul Gauguin into a unique style that prefigured later developments in modern painting. The painting remains a clear example of her mature period, where she balanced a raw, primitive sensibility with a refined sense of colour and composition. It is a quiet, contemplative piece that avoids sentimentality, focusing instead on the physical and psychological weight of the subjects.
