A striking still life by Gabriele Münter, featuring cyclamens and a hyacinth rendered with bold outlines and expressive colour.
Gabriele Münter, a founding member of the Der Blaue Reiter group, produced this still life during a period of intense creative development in Murnau. The composition features cyclamens and a hyacinth arranged against a neutral, light-toned background. Münter employs a characteristic approach to form, using heavy, dark outlines to contain areas of saturated colour. This technique flattens the pictorial space, shifting the focus from realistic representation to the expressive potential of the objects themselves. The palette consists of deep greens, purples, and blues, which contrast with the pale, textured surface of the background. By simplifying the shapes of the leaves and petals, Münter emphasises the structural quality of the flowers. Her brushwork remains visible, adding a tactile dimension to the surface of the cardboard. This work reflects the influence of folk art and the reduction of form that defined her practice during the early twentieth century. Unlike the more academic still life traditions of the era, this piece prioritises the subjective experience of the artist, capturing the essence of the botanical subjects through bold simplification and a deliberate, non-naturalistic use of colour. As a central figure in the Munich avant-garde, Münter maintained a distinct visual language throughout her career. Her work often explores the relationship between domestic objects and the surrounding environment. In this study, the interplay between the organic curves of the plants and the rigid, dark contours creates a sense of balance. The work remains an example of the transition toward abstraction that occupied many artists within the Der Blaue Reiter circle, where the objective was to express internal states through external forms.
