A geometric abstraction by Dutch artist Bart van der Leck, 'Lamb' uses simplified shapes and primary colours to suggest the form of an animal, embodying the principles of the De Stijl movement.
Bart van der Leck (1876-1958) was a Dutch painter, designer, and ceramicist. He began his career as a stained-glass artist before transitioning to painting. Van der Leck is associated with the De Stijl movement, which sought to reduce forms to their most basic geometric elements and colours. He briefly worked alongside Piet Mondrian and Theo van Doesburg, but his independent vision led him to develop his own style, characterised by simplified forms and primary colours. 'Lamb' exemplifies van der Leck's mature style. The composition consists of simplified geometric shapes in red, yellow, blue, black, and grey, set against a white background. These shapes, while abstract, suggest the form of a lamb. The arrangement is flat and ornamental, with a focus on the interplay of colour and form rather than realistic representation. The visible craquelure adds a sense of age and texture to the piece.
