A study of irises painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1889, featuring bold brushwork and a focus on complementary colour relationships.
Painted in May 1889 during his stay at the asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, this work captures a cluster of irises in the garden of the institution. Van Gogh began this canvas shortly after his arrival, working directly from nature. The composition is defined by a close-up view that fills the frame with the rhythmic, undulating forms of the flowers and their sword-shaped leaves. The colour palette relies on the contrast between the deep violet-blue of the irises and the surrounding greens of the foliage. A single white iris provides a point of tonal variation, while the background features a patch of orange-gold marigolds that creates a complementary colour harmony. The paint application is thick and directional, with visible brushstrokes that follow the contours of the petals and stems. This technique gives the surface a tactile quality, typical of the artist's late period. Van Gogh was influenced by Japanese woodblock prints, which is evident in the flattened perspective and the bold, dark outlines that define the floral shapes. Unlike his earlier works, which often focused on the psychological weight of a scene, this painting demonstrates a preoccupation with the decorative potential of colour and line. The absence of a horizon line forces the viewer to engage with the immediate physical presence of the plants. The work remains a primary example of his ability to transform a domestic garden subject into a study of movement and light. It was one of the first paintings he completed after a period of severe mental distress, and it reflects his attempt to find order and stability through the observation of the natural world.
