Dove's early work was influenced by Arthur Wesley Dow and European modernists such as Henri Matisse. He sought to capture the essence of his subjects through simplified forms and colours. 'Goat' exemplifies Dove's move towards abstraction. The animal is rendered in broad, simplified shapes and a limited colour palette.
