A dramatic woodblock print by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi depicting the wrathful deity Fudō Myōō confronting a novice monk.
This woodblock print by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi depicts a dramatic scene from Buddhist iconography. Fudō Myōō, the Immovable Wisdom King, appears in his wrathful form to confront a novice monk. The deity is characterised by his dark skin, fierce expression, and the sword he wields to cut through ignorance. Behind him, a stylised halo of flames rises against a dark background, providing a stark contrast to the figures in the foreground.
To the right, a serene figure stands in partial shadow, holding a lotus flower. This juxtaposition between the aggressive, protective energy of Fudō Myōō and the calm, spiritual presence of the secondary figure creates a narrative tension. The composition is divided across three panels, a common format for large-scale ukiyo-e works of the Meiji period. Yoshitoshi employs a precise line quality to define the garments and the sharp edges of the sword, while the flat application of colour maintains the traditional aesthetic of the medium.
Yoshitoshi was a master of the late ukiyo-e tradition, often focusing on historical, supernatural, and psychological themes. This work demonstrates his ability to manage complex compositions while maintaining clarity in the narrative. The use of negative space, particularly the dark void surrounding the figures, draws the viewer into the centre of the interaction. The print serves as an example of the technical skill required for multi-block printing, with careful registration of the colours and fine details in the patterns of the robes. The work remains a representative example of the artist's late career, where he moved away from the more conventional subjects of his contemporaries to explore darker, more atmospheric themes.
