A woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicting the morning scene at Nihonbashi bridge in Edo. This work is the first station in the series The Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō.
This woodblock print is the opening work in Utagawa Hiroshige's series, The Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō. It depicts Nihonbashi, the Bridge of Japan, which was the official starting point for all major roads leading out of Edo. The scene captures the early morning activity at the bridge. Fishmongers carry their catch in baskets suspended from poles. Other labourers and travellers begin their journey across the wooden structure. In the background, the white peak of Mount Fuji rises above a low bank of clouds. The composition uses a high vantage point to show the crowded bridge and the rows of storehouses along the riverbank. These white-walled buildings belong to the fish market that operated near the bridge. Hiroshige uses indigo and ochre tones with pale pink to suggest the light of dawn. The sky transitions from a warm yellow at the horizon to a deeper grey at the top. The water is rendered in a flat blue with simple lines indicating the flow of the river. Hiroshige produced this series after travelling the Tōkaidō road in 1832. Earlier ukiyo-e artists focused on famous landmarks in a static way. Hiroshige included the daily lives of ordinary people. The figures here are shown in motion. This creates a sense of a living city. The bridge acts as a framing device to lead the eye into the distance. This specific edition, published by Hoeidō, established Hiroshige as a leading landscape artist in Japan. The print demonstrates his skill in balancing architectural detail with atmospheric effects. The red cartouche in the upper right corner identifies the series and the station number. The artist's signature and the publisher's seals are visible on the left side of the composition.
