An etching by Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo, depicting Christ collapsing under the weight of the cross, surrounded by onlookers and Roman soldiers.
This etching by Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo (1727-1804) depicts a scene from the Stations of the Cross. Tiepolo, an Italian artist, was the son of the celebrated painter Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, and he often collaborated with his father on large-scale decorative projects. Domenico also produced a substantial body of independent work, including numerous prints. This image, rendered in fine lines, shows Christ collapsing under the weight of the cross. Roman soldiers and onlookers surround him. The scene is set against a backdrop of classical architecture, including a triumphal arch. The composition is crowded and dynamic, with figures overlapping and gesturing dramatically. The print is part of a series illustrating the Stations of the Cross, a popular subject for religious art during this period. The inscription at the bottom provides the title of the scene and a short verse in Italian.
