Van de Velde, a Dutch Golden Age painter and printmaker, was among the first generation of artists to specialise in realistic landscape subjects. His influence is particularly noted in the work of Jan van Goyen and Pieter de Molijn. He was born in Amsterdam but spent most of his career in Haarlem and The Hague. The composition shows a frozen river or canal with figures skating and interacting on the ice. A farmhouse is situated on the left, with bare trees adding to the wintry atmosphere. The etching technique allows for fine, detailed lines, capturing the textures of the buildings and the delicate branches of the trees.
