A detailed academic painting by Henryk Siemiradzki depicting the biblical meeting between Christ and the Samaritan woman at a well.
Henryk Siemiradzki, a prominent figure in late nineteenth-century European academic painting, produced this work in 1890. The composition depicts the biblical encounter between Jesus and the Samaritan woman at Jacob's Well. Siemiradzki, known for his meticulous attention to historical detail and light, places the figures within a sun-drenched, Mediterranean-inspired setting. The artist employs a balanced arrangement, with Christ seated on the stone edge of the well, gesturing towards the woman who stands opposite him, holding a water vessel.
The painting demonstrates the artist's technical proficiency in rendering textures, from the rough, weathered stone of the well to the soft folds of the drapery worn by the figures. The background features an open, airy expanse of olive trees and rolling hills, rendered with a clarity that reflects the artist's training in the traditions of the St. Petersburg and Munich academies. Siemiradzki often sought to combine religious narrative with a sense of archaeological authenticity, ensuring that the costumes and environment align with the period of the subject matter.
This work captures a moment of quiet dialogue. The interaction is framed by the natural environment, where the play of light and shadow across the ground suggests the heat of the day. The palette is dominated by earthy ochres, soft greens, and the bright, clear blue of the sky, which provides a sense of depth and atmosphere. Siemiradzki's approach to this scene avoids excessive theatricality, opting instead for a measured, observational quality that characterises much of his output during his time in Rome. The painting remains a clear example of the academic style, where narrative clarity and technical precision are held in high regard.
