A refined stipple engraving by Raphael Morghen, depicting the Archangel Gabriel in a serene, meditative pose with soft, tonal shading.
This stipple engraving by the Italian master Raphael Morghen depicts the Archangel Gabriel in a serene, contemplative state. Morghen, a highly skilled engraver of his era, utilised the stipple technique to achieve soft tonal transitions, mimicking the appearance of chalk drawings or paintings. The composition is contained within an oval frame, focusing the viewer on the delicate features of the angel, whose head is tilted slightly downwards with eyes cast in a meditative gaze.
The figure wears a simple, draped garment fastened with a brooch, while a circular halo surrounds the head, providing a subtle decorative element that does not distract from the overall composition. The monochromatic, sepia-toned ink choice lends the work a classical, timeless quality, consistent with the aesthetic preferences of the late eighteenth century. The inscription at the base provides historical context, noting the original location of the image in Florence and the date of the engraving.
Raphael Morghen was celebrated for his technical precision and his ability to translate the works of other masters into the medium of print. His work often involved the reproduction of religious and classical subjects, which were popular among collectors during the Grand Tour period. This specific print demonstrates his command over light and shadow, using thousands of tiny dots to build form and volume. The result is a quiet, dignified image that reflects the devotional art traditions of the period. The print remains a fine example of the high level of craftsmanship associated with European printmaking at the turn of the nineteenth century, offering a glimpse into the technical standards of the time.
