Yoshitoshi, a student of Utagawa Kuniyoshi, produced this work during a period of significant political and social transition in Japan. The composition captures a moment of extreme violence, characteristic of the artist's interest in dramatic, often gruesome, historical and theatrical narratives.

Banzuiin Chōbei is shown in a state of mortal injury, yet he maintains a composed posture while drinking from a wooden bucket.
