Lucas Cranach the Elder, a central figure of the German Renaissance, produced this narrative depiction of the Garden of Eden around 1530. The composition functions as a visual chronicle, presenting multiple episodes from the Book of Genesis within a single frame. In the foreground, God the Father instructs Adam and Eve, while to the right, the temptation occurs near the tree of knowledge. Further back, the expulsion from paradise is shown, with an angel driving the pair away.

The painting reflects the stylistic conventions of the period, characterised by a high degree of detail in the flora and fauna. Cranach populates the scene with various animals, including deer, horses, and birds, which inhabit the lush, green environment. The figures of Adam and Eve are rendered with the elongated proportions and pale skin tones typical of Cranach's work. Cranach was a close associate of Martin Luther, and his art often reflects the theological concerns of the Reformation.
