Eileen Gray, an enigmatic figure in 20th-century design, defied easy categorisation. Born in Ireland in 1878, Gray moved to Paris and initially trained in painting before discovering her talent for lacquerwork. This unique skill led her to interior design, where she created luxurious spaces for Parisian high society. However, Gray’s most significant contribution came with her foray into architecture, a field dominated by men. Rejecting the prevailing Art Deco style, Gray embraced Modernism, evident in her iconic E-1027 house, built on the French Riviera. This villa, a testament to her architectural vision, showcased her belief in functionalism and human-centric design. Gray designed much of the furniture and the building itself, creating a unified environment. Her work was admired by Le Corbusier, who later built a controversial cabanon on her property. Despite her innovative designs, Gray's work was largely overlooked during her lifetime. It was only in the late 20th century that her contributions were rediscovered and celebrated. Today, Eileen Gray is recognised as a pioneering figure in Modernist design, her furniture and architecture highly sought after for their timeless elegance and innovative spirit.
