Biography

One of Schütte's early interests was creating architectural models, sometimes for imagined, impossible structures. These "One Man Houses," for instance, offered small, isolated living spaces, reflecting a certain loneliness or self-containment. By the 1980s, his work expanded to include figurative sculptures, often depicting distorted or exaggerated human forms. These figures, sometimes made from clay, steel, or even marzipan, challenge traditional heroic representations.

His "United Enemies" series, begun in the mid-1990s, presents small, bound figures, often paired and placed inside glass vitrines. They appear entangled and powerless, a comment on human relationships and conflict. Later, his "Frauen" (Women) series (2000-2009) featured monumental, reclining female nudes crafted from steel or aluminium. These works possess a raw, almost brutal beauty, subverting classical ideals of the female form. Schütte continues to produce work that is both critical and formally inventive.
