Biography

Walker's personal history significantly shaped her artistic perspective. Moving from Atlanta, Georgia, to the predominantly white Stone Mountain area at age 13, she experienced a cultural shift that made her deeply aware of racial identity and historical memory. After studying at the Atlanta College of Art and the Rhode Island School of Design, she gained early recognition. In 1997, at just 27, she received a MacArthur Fellowship, an unusual honour for an artist so early in their career.

Her installations typically feature black figures against white walls, creating shadow plays that draw viewers into unsettling scenes. These works challenge viewers to confront the often-ignored complexities of history, especially the brutalities of slavery and racial oppression. Walker's art does not offer easy answers; instead, it provokes thought and discussion about historical representation and contemporary racial issues. Her approach ensures that difficult conversations remain central to her practice.
