A 1651 etching by Claude Lorrain, depicting a herd moving past classical ruins under a stormy sky.

Claude Lorrain, born Claude Gellée, produced this etching in 1651 during his long residence in Rome. The composition demonstrates his mastery of the idealised pastoral mode, a genre he helped define through his paintings and prints. The scene features a herd of cattle and goats being guided by a herdsman along a path, set against a backdrop of classical ruins and a distant fortified town. The left side of the print is dominated by the heavy, vertical presence of ancient columns, which provide a structural anchor for the eye. This architectural element contrasts with the expansive, atmospheric distance of the rolling hills and the clouded sky. The artist employs fine, hatched lines to create a sense of depth and to suggest the texture of the foliage and the weathered stone. The weather conditions, implied by the heavy clouds and the overall tonality of the etching, add a sense of movement to the otherwise tranquil scene. Lorrain was known for his careful observation of light and atmosphere, qualities he translated into the medium of etching with great precision. The figures of the animals and the herdsman are rendered with economy, allowing them to integrate into the broader environment rather than dominating it. This work reflects the seventeenth-century fascination with the classical past, where ruins were often incorporated into rural settings to evoke a sense of timelessness. The print remains a clear example of the artist's ability to balance human activity with the grandeur of the natural world. By using varied line weights, Lorrain achieves a sense of atmospheric perspective that draws the viewer from the foreground details into the hazy, distant horizon. This piece is a representative example of his graphic output, showing the technical skill he applied to his copper plates.
