Bernd Luz

1966–present · German

Before settling on abstract painting, Bernd Luz completed an apprenticeship as an industrial mechanic specialising in surgical technology. That route to fine art is not entirely irrelevant: the formal precision required in one profession appears to run through the other, though the subjects could hardly differ more.

Biography

Born in Rottweil, Germany, on 20 May 1966[1], Luz studied communication design at FH Konstanz (graduating 1993), winning first prize at the Swiss Youth Film Festival in 1986 while still a student. After graduating he founded Design Studio revoLUZion in Neuhausen ob Eck, later opening a second studio in Zurich (2003), and eventually relocating it to Schaffhausen, Switzerland. He worked across commercial design and studio practice for two decades before fine art became his primary focus.

Since 2013 his work has concentrated on a style he named Abstract Pop, fusing abstract formal language with pop art aesthetics. Its most consistent subject is automotive history: Luz creates mixed-media works interpreting historic motor racing and significant vehicles, combining collage, colour fields, and structural patterning to build visual narratives around speed and engineering heritage. The work has entered the permanent collections of the Cité de l'Automobile in Mulhouse (from 2011), the Nürburgring (from 2014), and Motorworld Stuttgart (from 2014). In 2017 a dedicated exhibition, Legends of Le Mans, ran at Automuseum Volkswagen Wolfsburg. He was appointed to the Advisory Board of the New York Auto Museum in 2021.
