Biography

After training at the Moscow School of Painting under Vasily Perov and at the Imperial Academy of Arts in St Petersburg under Pavel Chistyakov, he declined the conventional European tour when his diploma work failed to win its expected prize. Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich funded him personally; instead of Italy or Paris, Ryabushkin travelled through Novgorod, Kiev, Yaroslavl, and Uglich, studying folk crafts, manuscripts, textiles, and architecture.

The paintings that resulted sat awkwardly in the critical landscape. Works such as "Seventeenth-Century Moscow Street on a Public Holiday" (1895[1]) and "Wedding Train in 17th Century Moscow" (1901) were too documentary for academic conservatives but lacked the social conflict the Peredvizhniki demanded. He exhibited with the Itinerants in 1890, 1892, and 1894, then quietly distanced himself.

Between 1897[1] and 1900 he completed 24 mosaics for the Church of the Savior on Blood in St Petersburg. Pavel Tretyakov had bought his "Peasant Wedding" as early as 1880, when Ryabushkin was still a student.
