A powerful expressionist work by Emily Carr, depicting a Zunoqua totem figure amidst a forest filled with hidden feline eyes.
Emily Carr produced this work during a period of intense focus on the indigenous totem poles of British Columbia. The painting depicts a Zunoqua figure, a mythical being from Kwakwaka'wakw oral traditions, positioned in the foreground. The figure is rendered with sculptural weight, its carved features dominating the left side of the composition.
Behind the totem, the environment is transformed into a dense, swirling mass of green foliage. Within this vegetation, numerous cat eyes emerge, creating a sense of hidden activity and observation. The brushwork is rhythmic and energetic, reflecting the artist's interest in the spiritual presence she perceived within the natural world. The contrast between the static, carved wood of the totem and the fluid, organic movement of the surrounding forest is a hallmark of her mature style.
Carr often travelled to remote coastal villages to document these monuments, which were frequently abandoned or decaying at the time. Her approach was not purely documentary; she sought to interpret the emotional and spiritual resonance of the sites. The palette is dominated by deep forest greens, ochres, and shadows, which unify the disparate elements of the totem and the forest. This work captures the intersection of indigenous cultural history and the artist's personal, expressive response to the Canadian wilderness.
