A 16th-century hand-coloured woodcut depicting the Seven Sorrows of Mary, featuring a central Pietà surrounded by six narrative vignettes.
This hand-coloured woodcut, attributed to the 16th-century artist known as Monogrammist S, depicts the Seven Sorrows of Mary. The composition follows a traditional devotional structure, common in early printed books of the Northern Renaissance. A central scene of the Pietà, showing the Virgin Mary mourning over the body of Christ, acts as the anchor for the surrounding circular vignettes.
Each of the six surrounding medallions illustrates a specific episode from the life of the Virgin, documenting her grief. These include the Presentation in the Temple, the Flight into Egypt, the loss of the young Jesus in the Temple, the carrying of the Cross, the Crucifixion, and the burial of Christ. The arrangement of these scenes within a structured architectural frame demonstrates the period preference for systematic, didactic religious imagery. The woodcut technique relies on clear, defined outlines, which have been filled with a palette of primary colours, including red, blue, and yellow, typical of the period's hand-colouring practices.
The work reflects the devotional culture of the Low Countries during the 16th century, where such prints were produced for personal prayer books and broadsides. The artist uses a hierarchical scale, placing the central Pietà larger than the surrounding narrative scenes to focus the viewer on the emotional core of the subject. The architectural elements, such as the columns and arches, provide a sense of spatial order, while the flat application of colour maintains the graphic quality of the original woodblock print. This piece offers a glimpse into the intersection of early printmaking technology and the religious life of the era, providing a clear example of how narrative cycles were condensed into single-page formats for wider distribution.
