A sixteenth-century hand-coloured woodcut depicting the Lamentation of Christ, produced by the Dutch printer Doen Pietersz.
This hand-coloured woodcut by the Dutch printer and publisher Doen Pietersz. depicts the Lamentation of Christ. The scene captures the mourning figures gathered around the body of Jesus following the Deposition from the Cross. The composition is typical of early sixteenth-century devotional prints, which were produced to accompany religious texts and provide visual aids for private contemplation.
The artist employs a clear, graphic style characteristic of woodblock printing from this period. The figures are arranged in a tight, emotive grouping, with the Virgin Mary and other attendants expressing grief through their postures and gestures. The hand-applied colour, while simple in its application, adds a layer of visual weight to the garments and the landscape background. The presence of the monogram in the lower corner identifies the work within the context of Pietersz.'s active workshop in Amsterdam.
Such prints were often bound into small-format books, known as prayer books or books of hours. The physical constraints of the woodblock medium necessitated a focus on essential forms and expressive lines rather than atmospheric perspective. The result is a direct, unadorned representation of a central Christian narrative. The work reflects the broader circulation of religious imagery in the Netherlands during the early Reformation era, where printed media became a primary vehicle for disseminating theological themes to a wider audience. The preservation of the original paper texture and the slight irregularities in the hand-colouring provide a tangible connection to the production methods of the sixteenth-century printing trade.
