Hasui Kawase, a central figure in the Shin-hanga movement, produced this woodblock print in 1936. The work depicts the grounds of Zentsu Temple in the Sanshu region, captured during a period of light rain. Kawase is recognised for his ability to translate the atmospheric conditions of the Japanese countryside into the medium of woodblock printing. His technique relies on the collaboration between artist, carver, and printer to achieve subtle gradients of colour, particularly in the sky and the wet surfaces of the temple grounds.

The composition features a stone lantern in the foreground, which provides a sense of scale against the temple gate and the pagoda rising in the distance. The presence of figures with umbrellas introduces a human element, grounding the architectural subjects in a specific moment of daily life. The muted palette, dominated by soft greys, greens, and blues, reflects the damp, overcast weather conditions.
