A serene woodblock print by Hasui Kawase depicting Zentsu Temple in the rain, featuring a stone lantern and a distant pagoda.
Hasui Kawase, a central figure in the Shin-hanga movement, produced this woodblock print in 1936. The work depicts the grounds of Zentsu Temple in the Sanshu region, captured during a period of light rain. Kawase is recognised for his ability to translate the atmospheric conditions of the Japanese countryside into the medium of woodblock printing. His technique relies on the collaboration between artist, carver, and printer to achieve subtle gradients of colour, particularly in the sky and the wet surfaces of the temple grounds.
The composition features a stone lantern in the foreground, which provides a sense of scale against the temple gate and the pagoda rising in the distance. The presence of figures with umbrellas introduces a human element, grounding the architectural subjects in a specific moment of daily life. The muted palette, dominated by soft greys, greens, and blues, reflects the damp, overcast weather conditions. A single yellow umbrella serves as a point of visual interest, drawing the eye into the depth of the temple complex.
Kawase travelled extensively throughout Japan, sketching scenes that he would later refine into prints. His work often focuses on the quietude of rural locations, avoiding the rapid modernisation occurring in urban centres during the early twentieth century. This print demonstrates his mastery of light and shadow, using the woodblock process to create a sense of depth that feels both painterly and precise. The textures of the stone, wood, and foliage are rendered with a clarity that remains characteristic of his output for the Watanabe Shozaburo publishing house. This piece offers a view into a traditional Japanese setting, preserved through the meticulous craft of the Shin-hanga tradition.
