A serene Shin-hanga woodblock print by Yoshida Hiroshi, depicting visitors observing a temple pond framed by weeping willows and a distant pagoda.
Yoshida Hiroshi is a central figure in the Shin-hanga movement, which sought to revitalise traditional Japanese woodblock printing by incorporating Western techniques of light, shadow, and atmospheric perspective. In this print, titled Carp and Tortoises, the artist depicts a tranquil scene at a temple pond. The composition is anchored by the presence of weeping willows, their long, cascading branches framing the view of a distant pagoda. The foreground features a group of visitors observing the aquatic life, rendered with a focus on the varied patterns of their traditional attire.
The colour palette is restrained, relying on muted greens, soft blues, and earthy tones to convey a sense of calm. Yoshida was known for his meticulous approach to the printing process, often overseeing the carving and printing stages to ensure the final result matched his vision. Unlike traditional Ukiyo-e, which often utilised bold outlines and flat areas of colour, this work employs subtle gradations to suggest the depth of the water and the soft light of the day. The inclusion of the pagoda provides a vertical counterpoint to the horizontal spread of the pond and the figures gathered at its edge.
This print demonstrates the artist's ability to capture a specific moment of daily life while maintaining a sense of timelessness. The interaction between the human subjects and the natural environment is handled with precision, reflecting the artist's extensive travels and his keen observation of Japanese scenery. By blending the technical rigour of the woodblock medium with a modern sensibility, Yoshida created works that remain accessible and visually engaging. The print serves as a record of a quiet afternoon, preserved through the collaborative effort of the artist, the carver, and the printer.
