A watercolour seascape by Hendrik Willem Mesdag, 'Zee met pinken' depicts traditional Dutch fishing boats on a choppy sea under a cloudy sky. The muted palette and loose brushwork capture the atmosphere of the sea.
This watercolour by Hendrik Willem Mesdag (1831-1915) depicts a seascape with 'pinken', traditional Dutch fishing boats. Mesdag was a Dutch marine painter, watercolourist, and etcher, known for his seascapes and landscapes. He directed the Panorama Mesdag, a cylindrical painting of The Hague, from 1881 to 1885, a project that cemented his reputation. His work often captures the atmosphere of the sea and sky, reflecting the influence of the Hague School. In this watercolour, dated 1906, several pinken sail on a choppy sea under a cloudy sky. The palette is muted, dominated by greys and blues, which creates a sense of calm and vastness. The date '23 Februarie' is inscribed at the top, while the bottom reads '1 Augustus 1906', suggesting the work may have been started in February and completed in August. Mesdag's signature appears on the lower right. The loose brushwork and subtle gradations of tone capture the transient nature of light and weather at sea.
